What vodka is for
Vodka is distilled to be neutral. That is not an absence of character, it is the character — it gives a drink weight, alcohol and a colder, rounder texture without adding a voice of its own. When the point of the drink is coffee, or ginger, or cream, vodka lets that be the point.
The snobbery it attracts comes from judging it as a sipping spirit, where it genuinely has less to say than a good whisky. As a mixing ingredient it does a job nothing else does, which is why the drinks below have outlived every round of fashion.
Does the expensive bottle matter
Less than the marketing suggests, and more than the cynics claim. Above the very cheapest tier the differences are real but small: texture, a touch of sweetness, how much burn arrives at the end. In a Moscow Mule, buried under ginger and lime, you will not find them. In something spare and cold you might.
Buy a decent mid-shelf bottle and spend the difference on fresh citrus and better ice. Both will do more for the drink.

- Does expensive vodka make a better cocktail?
- Rarely enough to notice. Above the bottom shelf the differences are texture and finish, and in any drink with citrus, ginger or coffee in it they disappear entirely. A mid-priced bottle plus fresh juice beats a premium bottle plus a squeezy lemon every time.
- Can I use vodka instead of gin?
- You can, and the drink becomes a different one — usually softer and less structured, because you have removed the juniper the recipe was leaning on. Some drinks are better for it. A Martini is not.
- Should vodka be kept in the freezer?
- For drinking neat, yes — cold suits it and thickens the texture. For mixing it makes little difference, since the drink gets chilled and diluted anyway. It will not spoil either way.
