El Presidente

An outstanding rum sipper

Origin

El Presidente was created in Cuba by a bartender in the early 1900s, for President Mario Garcia Menocal. He was president of Cuba from 1913 to 1921. During Prohibition this cocktail became very popular with Americans, in search of real drinks on their trips. Following the popularity of this cocktail, then president Gerardo Machado wanted the drink to be edited in honour of himself. A bartender called Eddie Woelke added some curacao to the mix and created the incredible cocktail we now know as, El Presidente. Like most cocktails from this era, it died out in the later part of the century. In the 2000s it reappeared as cocktail making enjoyed its renaissance. An incredible drink from a beautiful country. El Presidente is one of our favourites!

How to make it

1. Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass
2. Add ice and stir for 30 seconds until chilled
3. Strain into your drinking glass, removing the ice
4. Garnish with a cocktail cherry, a twist of orange, or both

On the nose we get barrel and caramel notes form the rum mixed with orange. On tasting you get the rum up front (make it a good rum)! Orange and botanicals come next with a little sweetness. If you love rum, you need to try this cocktail! It’s outstanding! If you love a Manhattan you should try this too. In a Manhattan the whiskey is sweetened by the vermouth, in El Presidente the dry vermouth is sweetened by the rum. Plus, a splash of Grenadine and Curacao!

Enjoy!
